Secwepemcúl’ecw: Land Stewardship

This lesson on Indigenous land stewardship was developed from a research paper I co-wrote during my Indigenous Education course at TRU. Using Gemini to adapt the content into French for a Grade 6/7 French Immersion level, I created a foundational worksheet for the lesson which challenges the colonial misconception of the Secwépemc people as merely hunter-gatherers.  It demonstrates instead how their active, sophisticated stewardship created the abundant ecosystems encountered by early colonists in the B.C. Interior. The lesson contrasts Indigenous and Eurocentric worldviews regarding the land, examines the impacts of colonialism on traditional stewardship, and concludes with a video on Indigenous-led forest restoration, highlighting current Secwépemc initiatives to restore areas affected by mega-wildfires.
