Reconciliation Through Indigenous Education

This course provided me with a greater insight into the use of stories in Indigenous cultures. While I knew they were used for teaching, actually seeing this process in action allowed me to understand it at a much deeper level.

The course also provided me with a deeper understanding of how Indigenous world views differ from colonial world views. The example that I found to be the most effective in explaining this was giving a child a toy horse to play with. A lot of us would just give the child a horse and expect them to play. Indigenous world views tend to be more holistic and so the toy horse would need a field and forest (i.e. a place to play) before the child would be expected to play with the horse. From this, I have learned to make sure to include context in my lessons to better support the learning of Indigenous students.
