First People’s Principles of Learning (FPPL)

The FPPL were initially created to support curricular development and should therefore be viewed as a starting point for Indigenizing teaching practices.  The two main barriers to Indigenizing classrooms are the inherently colonial nature of the education system and a lack of knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures.  To authentically Indigenize teaching, educators must deepen their knowledge of local Indigenous cultures by engaging with the community through events like PowWows and building relationships with community members.  Indigenizing teaching requires a multifaceted approach that includes the incorporation of Indigenous pedagogies, educating students about Indigenous ways of knowing, teaching British Columbia’s history from multiple perspectives, amplifying of Indigenous voices, and continuous reflection and learning.
