Reading the Professional Standards for BC Educators is at once an overwhelming, exhilarating and a sombre experience.  It is overwhelming because it highlights the immense responsibility teachers bear—not just teaching content, but doing so in an inclusive and culturally sensitive way.  It is exhilarating because I look forward to connecting with my future students and helping them reach their potential.  However,it is also a sombre experience because it serves as a reminder of the harm the education system has caused to Indigenous students, families and communities.  Ultimately, I see the Professional Standards as a challenge to continuously learn, to continuously reflect on my practice, and to build strong relationships with my students.
