Rethinking Fractions

Dec. 2, 2024 (ProD Day with sd73)

This session highlighted a crucial balance in math instruction: some elements must be explicitly taught (like the symbol “2” representing two objects), while others should be left for students to explore and discover independently (like realizing 1/2 is equal to 0.5). Effective math teaching relies on explicitly presenting essential facts while structuring lessons so students can actively analyze and discover concepts that are “figure-out-able.” This balanced approach honours students’ unique problem-solving paths and fosters a much deeper conceptual understanding.
