I initially started going to the gym for the physical health benefits, but I continue because of the positive impact it has on my mental well-being. A morning workout gives me the energy and focus I need to carry me through the day.
One thing I really enjoy about going to the gym is the supportive atmosphere where ALL athletes are encouraged to do their best regardless of skill level. Workouts are designed to be accessible to everyone. I hope to create this same atmosphere in my classroom so that students learn to support each other and help each other do their best.
Going to the gym also keeps me humble. It helps me to recognize and accept my limits. Just because I can’t (and will probably never be able to) do a handstand pushup, does not stop me from getting a good workout or from working towards skills that are accessible to me. When teaching, I believe it is essential to know one’s limits and to set boundaries in order to maintain a healthy work-life balance.
