During my second practicum, I taught biodiversity to a Grade 2/3 class. I designed these lessons for students to wonder about nature (Centres), connect with nature (field trip) and reflect about what they can do to help the Earth.
During “Centres”, students explored various items from the local environment and considered how these items may be of use to local animals. These items included rocks, plants, bones and sand. I then took students on a walking field trip to Rae-Mor park where students created sound maps (listening quietly for 5 minutes while doing so), and a scavenger hunt to connect with nature.

The day after our field trip was Earth Day. I read students The Earth Book by Todd Parr in which he describes simple, everyday actions that children can take to help the earth. Students then created their own “earth books,” listing three to five actions they could take to help the Earth and explaining why they believed it was important to do so. The students followed the format in Todd Parr’s book using “I … because ….” statements.
Below is a reference letter that I received from the class.
